Supporting Mental Health

We would like to help you support your child during any period of isolation. The following are links to support your child’s wellbeing and mental and physical health.

Keeping active, getting outside (this can just be in the garden), being creative (e,g. baking, art), mindfulness time (e.g. mindful colouring, yoga, meditation), can all help support your child and yourselves.

Pause for Thought

Inspirational quotes, poems, and pearls of wisdom

In his poem ‘Leisure’ (1911) William Henry Davies wrote:

‘What is this life, if full of care

We have no time to stand and stare?’

We are all being given a rare opportunity to take a break from our usual, busy lives, and stop for a moment.  Spring is in the air and nature is bursting in to life.  So, take time to stop and look around you, and appreciate what you see.

Ways of coping and looking after our well-being

  • Try to keep some normal routines and structure
  • Have regular Well-Being check-ins in your household.  Talk about how you are all feeling (but remember, you may need to mask some of your anxiety so as not to worry your children).  Let children express what they are feeling – and if there’s a problem, find solutions together.
  • Keep moving – physical exercise is one of the best things for lifting low mood, as it releases feel-good chemicals in the brain.  This could be anything, from a bit of housework to a few star jumps – get creative.  For example, they say “dance as if no-one is watching” – so now’s our chance - stick some music on and dance round the living room!

Interesting facts and snippets of information

Shakespeare spent time in isolation during outbreaks of the plague, when all the theatres were shut.  He used this time to write some of his greatest plays.  So, just think what we could achieve in the coming months!
